This Audi Exclusive S1 Sportback is very much one of those cars, and jumps straight to the top of that list. It is quite good enough to enter a collection, take to car shows, or simply enjoy as is.
The S1 was the final performance model built by Audi with a manual transmission, and marked the end of an era. They were compact, relatively light, simple, and did a wonderful job of pairing usability with fun. They were not so powerful as to feel overwhelming or unusable, but offered ample to make you smile whilst exploiting a winding B-road. A TUV approved, ABT plugin ECU upgrade (fitted from new) adds some top end fizz to the power delivery here also. Whilst the upgrade is very much part of the car's history and character, the module is easily removed should a future owner prefer it.
We were fortunate enough to be offered this car by its one and only owner, who specified it new exactly to his liking and has cherished it ever since. Always garaged, always kept clean, and maintained with a satisfyingly 'no compromise' approach. The modest mileage and exacting attitude to its upkeep makes for an S1 that transports you back to 2017 in feel and appearance. I well remember driving these when they were new cars, and that's exactly what this one feels like.
